He took 26 Wickets during the series against West Indies at Home in 2001-02. He is the 4th Position in Most Wicket taker List in ODI History and 2nd Position in Sri Lanka Team with 400 Wickets, After Muttiah Muralitharan.
He is the 24th Position in Most Wicket taker List in Test Format History and 3rd Position in Sri Lanka Team with 355 Wickets, After Muttiah Muralitharan & Rangana Herath. He was named captain in Sri Lanka ODI Cricket in 2006, in only one Match. He was Sri Lanka’s new ball attacking bowler. On 12 December 2005, Chaminda Vaas achieved 300th Wicket against India.
